It was a unique opportunity orchestrated by Soulbath Peace Foundation's guidance and timely help to reach out to the Children of Sharada Vidyaniketan in my neighborhood who also readily agreed & invited me to conduct the IBM Go Green Learning Activity. This was attended by 100 children of the school where we interacted with them on the 3R's Reduce ,Reuse and Recycle concepts of the Go Green Kids IBM activity kit. Children were very enthusiastic in understanding and interacting with us on how the 3R's can be useful to us in the Society. They reasoned out the issues faced by the society on waste produced on a day to day basis at school, home and else where. They also realized problems related to the plastic covers and how we have been using them frequently and generating waste. Ideas came up on different materials like package materials which never get used and go into waste.
Using the concept of first R-Reduce children calculated the number of plastic covers all children an avoid on a day to day basis. The Raj Bhowmik -Plastic Free Planet Movement that is famous in the neighbourhood as a living example of living green steps was the most easy to relate. The simple RB-PFP Cloth bag was taken as example to show how the usage of plastic covers can be reduced. Brainstorming on how to use the next R-Reuse children came up with very good Ideas of how to use papers can
be used in different ways and sharing of text books and any other Items. The concept of Recycle was given to them on how big companies like IBM are working towards recycling .They also came up with some Ideas on how they can Implement the ideas of 3R's and RB-PFP both at
School and home.
Children were very interactive, attentive and receptive to all the concepts and have promised to use it and spread it where ever they go .This was a wonderful activity to conduct which brings in awareness on
some of the responsibilities as a citizens. Bangalore facing this as a current issue has brought more focus from children and management of the school towards the 3R's and RB-PFP project. The CORPORitual Values of living were introduced to the children that is a Gift to the World by Sri Raj Bhowmik to create a Plastic Free Planet so that they stand as better individuals and grow up to become good Citizens.
I would thank Soulbath Peace Foundation and IBM for giving me this opportunity to work on this wonderful activity to benefit the society . You have been the platforms through which I could express myself truly as a human and am feeling useful. My wife Vijaya and a colleague Mr. Sudhir Raikhar (IBM Employee) also accompanied and participated in the event wholeheartedly. Vijaya Vallabhu (Family of IBM Employee Engaging through CSR Initiative with Soulbath Peace Foundation)
Today I had an opportunity to be a part of the workshop which was conducted as a part of IBM’s ‘Go Green Kids’ activity and Soulbath Peace Foundation’s Raj Bhowmik –Plastic Free Planet (RB-PFP) initiative. These initiatives taken by two different groups one group which is a corporate giant while the other one is an Non-Profitable organization but both targeting to one common cause of making a cleaner and safer environment for the tomorrow . The workshop was conducted for the fifth, sixth and seventh grade children of Sharada Vidyaniketan in Lakshmipuram , Bangalore. There were about 100 children, four teachers and three volunteers representing IBM and Soulbath Peace Foundation .
The workshop started with a note of thanks to the management of IBM and the Founder of Soulbath Peace Foundation Sri Raj Bhowmik for enabling the awareness of the 3 R’s Reduce, Reuse and Recycle spread in the society. As this school caters to the children from lower income group who come from slums around Ulsoor and Lakshmipuram this awareness has actually spread to the lowest strata of the society. The IBM’s “Go Green Kids” activity kit was used to explain in detail to the children about the importance of going green and how major companies are actually following this with examples. The awareness of how plastic consumption is hazardous was clearly discussed with examples from the daily life with children themselves sharing that each one uses about four plastic covers a day on an average, and when this data was multiplied the children could relate to the fact that the plastic consumption is hazardous and needs to be minimized. The facts that plastic manufacture is cheaper than recycling and the energy consumed to recycle is more and so the options left out are to just stop using plastic was discussed in detail. The RB-PFP initiative which encourages the use of cloth bags exactly fits in here and with an example of the RB-PFP bag the children were made to understand what they can do to stop using plastic was discussed.
The fact that the people are running behind ‘having more’ than ‘being more’ was discussed integrating the CORPORitual values of living and how this helps an individual to have a more sustained way of life with minimum possessions . This is where the concept that we need to buy only the needed equipment, mobile phones, electronic goods and the need to share and when we run behind having more the harm which we cause to the environment around us was discussed. The children agreed to the point as they shared their understanding very beautifully saying “we as humans have brain to think and we can definitely Reduce the consumption.” The optimization and the need to reduce the use of paper , how it affects the environment around us was also discussed in detail.
These are all facts but the actual implementation of any activity and carrying forward any initiative actually depends on the individual. So to empower the children the four CORPORitual Values Of Living were discussed after making them aware of the facts. These values of living help an individual to make fundamental changes to the self and be more responsible and more aware of his action. The entire initiative got power packed and was delivered as a capsule with the CORPORitual Values in place.
This workshop currently fits into the crisis which Bangalore is facing over past few months about the waste dumping and segregation , plastic hazards etc. I connected to this workshop from a very different point of representing both Soulbath Peace Foundation as a volunteer and IBM as an employee’s spouse who organized and conducted the workshop representing both IBM and Soulbath Peace Foundation .
The workshop was concluded with a note of thanks to all the children and the school management who had taken up the initiative of banning all the foods packed in plastic with immediate effect.
I thank Soulbath Peace Foundation and Sri Raj Bhowmik for providing me this opportunity to be a part of such a great cause of empowering the kids with the need to save the environment and making it safer and greener for tomorrow.
